Leeuwenhoek, Antonie van
(24 oct. 1632, Delft, Países Bajos–26 ago. 1723, Delft).

Microscopista holandés. En su juventud fue aprendiz de un pañero. Un empleo público posterior le permitió dedicarse a su afición: pulir lentes y usarlos para observar objetos diminutos. Con sus sencillos microscopios observaba protozoos en agua de lluvia, pozas y norias, así como bacterias de la boca y de los intestinos humanos. También descubrió los corpúsculos sanguíneos, los capilares y la estructura de los músculos y nervios y, en 1677, describió por primera vez los espermatozoides de insectos, perros y seres humanos. Continúa siendo un misterio cómo aumentaba la potencia de sus lentes lo suficiente para obtener tales resultados. Sus investigaciones en animales inferiores desvirtuaron la doctrina de la generación espontánea, y sus observaciones contribuyeron a establecer los fundamentos de la bacteriología y la protozoología.
